PERSONAL PROJECT // LAST DAY OF FIFTH GRADE

Fifth grade started off just fine. Greydon’s grades were very good, he played lots of baseball throughout the fall and started playing Fortnite with friends online. I’m giving a special shoutout to his buddy, Micah. Micah and Greydon spent at minimum 4 hours a day talking on Facetime and playing online. Where would we be without our friends and technology during this time?

And then March happened. Greydon had just finished winter indoor baseball training and playing rec basketball when he fell in the last game and broke his wrist in two places. The cast was put on the morning of Friday, March 13th, so he arrived at school late that morning. Little did we know that would be the last time Greydon would walk through the front doors of Damascus Elementary. Today we went to school to pick up all the things he had left in the classroom that Friday.

Like many students, Greydon had a couple weeks off before online school began. In all honesty, Greydon did the best he could. He barely kept up with classes and assignments on his own, but at times proved to be too tough, so I stepped in and managed the school process. Fletcher has been working from home since March 18th. Add in two cats, Rudy and Ginger, and it’s been the five of us in the house.

Today marks Greydon’s last day of elementary school. He’s ready for middle school. Frankly, he’s ready to go back to school in person. He managed online school well and enjoyed the college-type schedule, but he misses his friends (“even the annoying ones”). Haircuts at home. Wrestling matches. Movies. Baking. Strolls around the neighborhood. Backyard fire pits with neighbors. We installed a swing where Greydon places his phone in the wood pile so he can watch YouTube. Gardening. It’s been a relaxing and schedule-free spring.

Here are some last day photos or elementary school. Welcome the newest member of the dog pound. Greydon is now a Baker Bulldog! Off to middle school he goes!
